What are panpipes?

Panpipes, also known as pan flutes are instruments which have many pipes that are in different sizes, each size allows for a different sound to come from them. They come in different scales, mostly in the C major scale, which is the normal piano scale for simplicity.

Some panpipes are adjustable, which means that they you can change their scales, this is because they have a certain cap inside which you can push inwards and outwards, to produce different sounds.

While most panpipes are designed to be right handed, some are also left handed or both sided. Therefore you can choose depending on what you would like.

One other unique thing about this product is that it comes with a lovely hand made cover which emits a tribal vibe as well.

Try to keep this instrument away from humid areas, and clean it once you are done with it. This will make sure it lasts longer , and keeps a good smell.

Now you are done with checking the 5 options, I suggest you check the frequently asked questions below, you will most likely find some further information that can be helpful.

Also.

In case you haven't heard any panpipe music before, then here is a beautiful compilation.

Things to keep in mind for your panpipe:

There are some important points that you should keep in mind whether you have bought your pan flute yet or not.

1.Which side panpipe should you choose?

When choosing the panpipe, generally going for right-handed panpipes is the better and easier option. This is because the way the structure of the notes are made, is similar to the piano and a lot of other instruments, therefore you will be able to convert what you learn from there to here and vise versa.

2.How should you handle your panpipe?

When getting your panpipe, it is important to note that these instruments are quite fragile.

Therefore, if you drop it, it could break or go out of tune, so handle it carefully.

Also, once you are done from playing with the instrument, make sure to put it back in its cover, and keep it away from humid areas.

Since most of the panpipes are made out of wood, wood is not very happy with humid areas.

And finally, when you are done playing, make sure to wipe the holes to make sure it doesn't start getting a smell.

3.Whichever scale your pan flute has, doesn't mean that you can't play more scales.

When you buy an instrument, people tend to think that just because the instrument is toned in a specific way, that it can only play songs that are also tuned in this scale.

However, that is not the case, you can in fact play almost any song on a scale you have.

So if you have a song you really like and want to play, just enter the song name in google search for the scale your panpipe has, and you should be able to find it there.

Frequent Questions:

1. What is a panpipe made of?

Panpipes can be made out of many different material and colors. The main material a panpipe is made of are bamboo canes, giant canes, and local reeds. However, there are other pipes which are made out of harder objects such as metals and coppers.

Although there are different material, in general the sound outcome is similar in all of them. Some might prefer the wood types more, as they are more original.

2. How is a panpipe played?

Panpipes are played properly through proper breathing and applying the correct angle of breathing. Each pipe can make 2 different sounds, the normal note and the sharp note. The normal notes, will be organized as the piano notes which allows for higher simplicity of playing.

As panpipes can be right handed or left handed, the scales are reversed in each. You have to breathe in deeply through your mouth, and then slowly breathe out each time you want to create a sound. To change the note to a sharp sound, you have to tilt the panpipe upwards and blow into the edge of the panpipe.

3. Why is it called a panpipe?

The word panpipe is actually two separate words, which are pan and pipe. The word Pan, is a Greek word, which resembled the God of harvest and nature, it is mentioned here as he was always holding one with him. The word pipe resembles all the pipes.

4. Which panpipe is good?

To choose a panpipe that is good for you, you have to take a couple of points into consideration. You have to pick a right or left handed panpipe according to your skills, you have to choose the right amount of pipes and notes, and you have to choose the right material and scale.

All of these points are mentioned above.

If you learned some new things today and were able to make a better decision in buying your panpipe, I am glad. If you know someone else who might also be interested in a panpipe, make sure to share this link to them below!
